New Seasons targets “late October” opening of Vancouver location

Last month, New Seasons Market announced plans to open a store in Vancouver by the end of this year. Now, the company’s president has revealed the grocery chain is eying an October opening.

“I’m hoping for late October,” said Lisa Sedlar, president and Chief Executive Officer of New Seasons Market. “We’re also opening our new Progress Ridge store (in Beaverton) in the fall, so we’ll see [about the timing].”

The Vancouver New Seasons store will be located at the intersection of Southeast 164th Avenue and McGillivray Boulevard in Fisher’s Landing. According to Sedlar, the company picked that spot because of its proximity to other retail stores.

“We’ve been looking in Vancouver for quite a while, probably five years,” she said. “We had been looking specifically at the Fisher’s Landing location because there’s a lot of retail synergy there and when people are making trips they tend to want to go to one area as opposed to ten areas.”

When asked about the closeness of Whole Foods Market on nearby Mill Plain Boulevard, Sedlar said it wasn’t really a factor.

“I think because we sell natural, organic and conventional foods, we feel like we’re different enough from them; There wasn’t any great concern,” she explained.

Sedlar said New Seasons thought about moving into the Fisher’s Landing community in 2008, but decided to wait when the economy took a turn for the worse.

This year, she said, the timing was “just right.”
