Local theaters go all-in on
beer & wine legislation

“We’re not moving any further on our lease until we have some assurances that this is going to happen,” he asserted.

Last week, many watching the progress of Moeller’s bill were fearful for its future after a similar theater-related bill in the Senate (SB 5607) was amended last week to exclude theaters with more than 120 seats. That bill, however, includes hard liquor in addition to beer and wine, and was never meant to compete with HB 1001, according to Senator Nick Harper (D-Everett).

“There was some confusion early on that to include spirits would mean amending Rep. Moeller’s bill or wrapping everything up into a single bill,” said Harper, who introduced SB 5607. “Instead, [Senate] members should view these as two separate vehicles that give a theater two different options in terms of pursuing a license.

“My hope is that Rep. Moeller’s bill can move through the Senate largely in the way that it came out of the House,” he added.

HB 1001 will be reviewed by the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee sometime next week.
