“The campaign thus far has been both gratifying and successful,” said Elson Strahan, CEO and president of the Trust, in a press release. “We want to continue our efforts to our maximum ability with the extension of the campaign.”

Ed Lynch, chair of the Academy Campaign, kicked off the fundraising with a personal $2 million gift.

“Over the years I have been privileged to support many important efforts in our community. However, in my view there is no more important undertaking than the acquisition and preservation of the Academy,” he said. “I hope that the community also sees the importance of securing this historic building and preserving it for the future. I hope that those who have not already joined me in this undertaking will make a commitment to ensure that this building will be sustained for the public good in perpetuity.”

The Academy is currently owned by the Hidden family, who purchased it in 1969. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
