2013 Innovator of the Year

Paul Slowey-Oasis Diagnostic Corporation

Oasis owns 14 patents with another 10 in process; the company’s devices have applications in public health, drug testing and general wellness. For example, the company recently introduced a device for collecting and testing RNA in saliva specimens, and company’s rapid saliva testing platform is the basis for a series of products under development.

In the last fiscal year, the company earned $2.1 million in revenue and expects that figure to rise significantly over the next several years – in part fueled by the firm’s pending acceptance to the government’s GSA. The company ranks have swelled as well, growing from three to 11 employees in the last 18 months (not including several sales reps).

2013 Innovator of the Year Finalist

Tony Liu-SunmodoSunModo Corporation

SunModo Corporation, University of Washington’s 2012 Southwest Washington Minority Business of the Year, has applied for 13 patents, five of which have been granted. Founded by Tony Liu, previously an engineer with Intel, SunModo is developing innovative products that help installers of solar panels cut costs and increase productivity. For example, the company has developed a new pitched-roof rail-less mounting solution that can significantly reduce the labor costs associated with racking and mounting installations. For commercial flat-roof installations, SunModo has developed an all-aluminum racking solution that has only one roof penetration per kilowatt, compared to the typical eight to 12 penetrations per kilowatt. The company also makes ground-mount solutions.

In general, said Stella Sun, SunModo’s marketing manager, the firm focuses on “technology that combines structure, wire management, and electrical grounding into simple, integrated products.”

SunModo’s 2012 revenue was double that of 2011. After catching its breath and putting some new processes in place during 2013, the company anticipates that its revenue for 2014 will double again.
