Wells Fargo donates $3,000 to local nonprofit

Children in low-income families in Clark County will be able to receive a free, refurbished computer, thanks to a $3,000 donation from Wells Fargo to the nonprofit Empower Up.

Located at 5000 East Fourth Plain Boulevard in Vancouver, Empower Up donates hundreds of refurbished computers each year to children who are unable to afford them. It also operates a resale shop for computers and provides computer training for local residents so they can seek employment in that industry.

“The computers that will be refurbished for these children become theirs to keep,” said Lisa Schmidt, an Empower Up board member.

“63 percent of households in Clark County earning under $35,000 have access to the Internet,” Schmidt said. “With Wells Fargo’s help, we’ll enable more households to access the means to a brighter future and help the environment stay green.”

The Wells Fargo gift has stimulated other grants. Three companies have come forward to match the $3,000 and have also donated used computers to the organization to refurbish.
