RR industrial code in the works

When the Board of Clark County Commissioners adopted the county’s 20-year growth plan, it designated land for railroad industrial purposes. Now county planners are working to create a third type of industrial zoning specifically for the areas, which will join light and heavy industrial.

“We want to marry our code up with the types of industries that should come to Clark County,” said Fred Abraham, railroad coordinator for Clark County Community Planning. “We’re not looking for steel and aluminum producers – we want clean industries that provide good paying jobs but won’t greatly impact the community.”

The designation will combine bits and pieces of light and heavy industrial code and have additional language that makes it more reasonable for a new company or shipper that is rail-dependent, Abraham said.

The development of the code and design standard is in the early stages and the Railroad Resource Work Group has been formed to help steer the process. Once it is developed, the county will hold open houses, gather public input and ultimately the code will go before the Railroad Advisory Board and the Board of Clark County Commissioners.
