Nonprofits to gather donations at State of the County 2012

Local nonprofits will team up with county officials and guests this year at State of the County 2012 to gather support for families in need.

The event will be open to the public at no charge from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Washburn Performing Arts Center at Washougal High School, 1201 39th Street, in Washougal.

Since 2010, the Salvation Army has been collecting non-perishable food and donations at the county gathering. The event provided more than 1,000 pounds of food in 2011, enough to feed more than 100 people for about a week.

This year, other groups will have representatives to provide information about community services, accept donations and welcome volunteers. Participants will include Inter-Faith Treasure House of Camas-Washougal, Share, Open House Ministries, Children’s Home Society of Washington and Parks Foundation.

The featured speaker will be Commissioner Marc Boldt, the 2012 chair of the Board of County Commissioners. He is making a special appeal for displays of community sharing and caring because many families and businesses continue to struggle in this area of exceptionally high unemployment.
