Vancouver Farmers Market set to reopen

The Vancouver Farmers Market will open for its 20th season on Saturday, March 20 at Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver. Opening day will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. and will conclude at 3 p.m.

CRC Council moves forward

The Columbia River Crossing Project Sponsors Council discussed recommendations to manage traffic congestion during and after construction at a Friday, March 12 meeting.

The meeting was open to the public, taking place at the Region 1 office of the Oregon Department of Transportation in Portland.

The agenda was expected to include a report on new research conducted on the economic impact of freight to the Portland-Vancouver region, federal funding and progress on the Vancouver light rail alignment.

Contest celebrates 100 years

First Independent Bank, based in Vancouver, decided to celebrate its centennial with a poster contest open to Clark College students, with the first place award, including $1,000 and a year's worth of community exposure, going to Maggee McCarney, a graphic communications major.

"I've gotten to learn the nitty-gritty of bringing an idea from conceptual design to commercial application and print production," McCarney said.

First Independent operates 20 branches in Washington and Oregon and has over $1 billion in assets.

AmeriCorps pay and teach

Applications for the Washington Service Corps, a branch of AmeriCorps, are now being accepted.

Positions will start September 2010 and last for 10 to 12 months. Varying levels of experience and education are accepted, and applicants must be at least 17 years old.  Members receive a living allowance as well as an education award of $5,350 that can be used for college costs or to pay off qualified student loans.
