From the ‘Couve to Croatia

Andro Vlahusic, newly elected mayor of Dubrovnik in the Republic of Croatia, announced last week that he accepted an invitation to host a version of the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival in his home city.

Dr. Michael Kissinger, founder of the Festival in Vancouver, has been working for three years with business and artistic leaders in Dubrovnik to create a "sister city" jazz and wine event for the Adriatic coastal town, which has been designated by the U.N. as a World Heritage site and boasts 900,000 tourists annually.

The 13th season of the Festival will be held Aug. 26-29 in Vancouver and will travel to Dubrovnik early in 2011.

Children's store franchisee gets award

Deborah Weimer, owner of children's supply franchise Once Upon A Child in Vancouver, received a Sales Excellence Award at the company's annual conference last week in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Minneapolis-based Once Upon A Child has over 230 franchised stores in the U.S. and Canada, selling brand name, gently used kids supplies from apparel and baby equipment to books and toys.

"Receiving this award is a great inspiration for enhancing my Once Upon A Child business," Weimer said.
