Wells Fargo wins philanthropy award

San Francisco-based Wells Fargo Bank has been named Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation in Washington for 2009 by the state chapter of the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

AFP has sponsored an annual awards program since 1989 to recognize outstanding philanthropic achievement in Washington by an individual, family, corporation, small business, foundation, organization and youth.

Several Washington nonprofits, including Powerful Voices and Bellevue College, nominated Wells Fargo for the award.  A group of previous award recipients, grantmakers and nonprofit professionals selected the 2009 philanthropy award recipients.

"This outstanding recognition is the direct result of the caring, commitment and community spirit of many thousands of our team members who every day give so much of their time and talents to serve our communities," said Don Pearson, Wells Fargo regional president for southwest Washington and Oregon.

Wells Fargo will be honored at the annual National Philanthropy Day awards luncheon on Friday, Nov. 13.  Last year, more than 1,000 members of the community attended the luncheon, making it the largest celebration of philanthropy in the nation.

Wells Fargo has repeatedly been named one of the most generous corporations in America. Earlier this year, Wells Fargo was named among the "100 Best Corporate Citizens" by CRO Magazine and also received United Way of America Summit Awards for Community Impact and Community Volunteerism.

Founded in 1852, Wells Fargo & Company is a diversified financial services company with $1.3 trillion in assets, providing banking, insurance, investments, mortgage and consumer finance across North America and internationally.

Vineyards unite for "grape integrity"

The Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers pushed for a bill that requires state wines to contain 95 percent Washington grapes, which passed during the 2009 legislative session. WAWGG submitted a petition to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau's Office of Regulations and Rulings to push for a "grape integrity" bill on the federal level.

The petition proposes that American appellations of origin and labeled "American" be made entirely from grapes grown in the U.S.  Current TTB regulations allow up to 25 percent foreign wine in bottles labeled "American."

Petitioners, in addition to WAWGG, include the California Association of Winegrape Growers, the New York Wine Grape Growers Association and the Oregon Winegrowers Association.
