Turtle Place wins international award

Turtle Place, a temporary plaza in downtown Vancouver, received the 2009 Award of Distinction for Public Spaces last week from the International Downtown Association.

The award recognizes innovation, replication and impact for the project.

Vancouver's Downtown Association, in partnership with C-TRAN and the city of Vancouver, transformed an underused bus mall into an urban plaza with public art, seating and other amenities.

"We are proud of our effort and truly appreciate the many community partners who participated in the making of Turtle Place," said Lee Coulthard, president of VDA.

Murray pushes for veterans bills in Senate

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) spoke at a hearing of the Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs Oct. 21 in favor of bill she introduced to support veterans. The bills cover diverse veteran's issues covering homelessness, prisoner-of-war benefits and chiropractic care.

"While my bills each deal with different areas of veterans' care, they share a common thread," Murray said. "Each of them would give the VA better tolls to provide our veterans with the care and benefits they have earned through their selfless service to our nation."
