Local web hosting company now powers customers with wind energy

Vancouver-based Dotster.com, an accredited domain registrar and one of the world's largest web hosting companies, has announced a working relationship with the Bonneville Environmental Foundation to power more than 4.4 million websites with wind energy.

"We wanted to take the first step in leading our industry in sustainable business practices," said Clint Page, CEO of Dotster.

By using wind power, the company said it has offset more than 150 percent of its domain name and web hosting servers' environmental impact.

A sign of success

Teresa Kung and Barry Leung of Fastsigns sign and graphics center in Vancouver were recently announced as the winners of a corporate-sponsored competition. The owners qualified for an all-expense paid cruise to Mexico.

To qualify for the prize, Fastsigns owners around the world were challenged to increase their center's sales by at least 20 percent compared to this time last year. The Vancouver-based team not only met that mark, they surpassed it with an 80 percent jump in sales from the previous year – the highest increase among some 500 locations.

"The past year has been difficult and like everyone else we've been feeling the effects of the economy," said Kung. "Regardless, we refused to give in to the recession, continued to support the community and worked hard and it paid off."

The corporate program was designed as a way to reward Fastsigns locations who were proactively seeking ways to grow their centers.

Kung's location was one of 40 across the nation that was able to positively influence their sales.
