First Independent Bank will host free paper shred and electronic recycling events from 9 a.m. to noon at the following branches: Salmon Creek, April 24; Battle Ground, May 1; Fisher's Landing, May 15; and Orchards, May 22.

Covering 12.7 million acres of private and state forest protected by the Dept. of Natural Resources, Washington state's "summer fire rules" took effect April 15. The regulations affect loggers, firewood cutters, land clearers, road builders, off-road motorcyclists and others.

Gov. Chris Gregoire (D-Wash.) last week announced that the state met federal Recovery Act weatherization requirements, clearing the way for the state Dept. of Commerce to receive an additional $30 million for low-income weatherization projects.
