Employee launches $10,000 personal matching campaign for Second Step Housing

Valerie Norris, case manager at Vancouver’s Second Step Housing, and her husband Joel Green recently announced plans to give $10,000 of their personal savings to match donations during the months of February and March to Second Step Housing.

Norris said that when she learned county funding was being eliminated for the Nurturing Parent program at Second Step, she decided to rally the community and save the program.

“My husband and I usually give money to lots of different places, but since the funding for this program was eliminated we thought we’d give $10,000 to help that program,” she said.

The Nurturing Parent program serves families in the Vancouver area by providing parenting classes to improve the entire family dynamic. The courses are also offered for the hearing impaired.

“When Valerie came to me with her idea, I was not only thrilled, but also really moved,” said Debby Dover, Second Step’s executive director. “We know this program has a positive effect on the families we serve, and we are the only agency who has been able to serve the deaf population.”
