Downtown businesses sponsor fundraiser at Kiggins Theatre

A dozen local businesses along with Occupy Vancouver are sponsoring two showings of the award-winning documentary “I AM” at the newly restored Kiggins Theatre in downtown Vancouver. Organizers plan to use the event to raise awareness and funds for several local charities such as Evergreen Habitat for Humanity, Friends of the Carpenter, Urban Growers Market and Must Love Dogs NW.

In the documentary, director Tom Shadyac (Bruce Almighty, Liar Liar, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) speaks with intellectual and spiritual leaders about what’s wrong with our world and how we can improve both it and the way we live in it.

I AM will be shown Monday, January 16 and Tuesday, January 17 at 7 p.m. While tickets are free, attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food, clothing or donate money. 100 percent of what is raised will go directly to each of the charities. Following each showing there will be a moderated 30-45 minute discussion for movie-goers wanting to explore what the message of the film means to them personally or to the community. Discussions will be moderated by Paul Spindel of the nonprofit Earth Wisdom Alliance.

Local businesses sponsoring the upcoming event include: Canine Utopia, Mt. Tabor Brewing, Neighbors Market, PDH Creative, Pop Culture, Mint Tea, Frontdoor Back, Urban Eccentric, Ice Cream Renaissance, Niche Wine & Art, Shanti Yoga and Vancouver Food Co-op.
