Columbia Credit Union donates to SWWDC STEM program

Columbia Credit Union recently gave a donation to the Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council’s (SWWDC) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program. The credit union is a sponsor of the 2012 spring and fall sessions of the STEM Institute, a hands-on career learning experience designed to generate interest and awareness in STEM-related professions for high school students.

“We’re excited to help teens discover a STEM career as a possible profession,” said SWWDC Director of Strategic Initiatives Mary Brown. “With Columbia’s support, we’re working to ensure the success of Clark County’s future workforce.”

This isn’t Columbia Credit Union’s first STEM-related donation. In November 2011, the credit union gave a $60,000 gift to Washington State University Vancouver’s new engineering and computer science building.

Columbia Credit Union President and CEO Steve Kenny said both donations align the credit union with Clark County’s 20-year economic plan to promote higher education and research to ensure our area’s future prosperity.

“Clark County’s plan is riddled with reasons for us to move swiftly and with purpose in support of local higher education – in particular, areas of study that will anchor information technology and software companies, near-field communications, multimedia and the healthcare industry,” said Kenny.
