City of Vancouver: iPads are in, paper is out

In an effort to move toward a paperless environment, city of Vancouver staff and council members are now utilizing iPads to send and review documents.

Officials said grants paid for half of the iPads, reducing the city’s out-of-pocket costs to $17,000. The city expects to recoup those costs in about two years.

During Vancouver’s first three paperless City Council meetings this year, the city printed 40 percent fewer pages in handouts. Officials estimate the city will save approximately 71,500 pages by the end of 2012.

The city of Vancouver is also using technology to modernize city services. Officials said the goal is to open up citizen access to and from City Hall by moving meetings and information from city buildings, into people’s homes, laptops and cell phones.
