Business climate, spirit awards highlight State of the County

Hundreds of people turned out for the annual State of the County event Thursday night in Washougal, bringing food and other donations to help low-income families.

Marc Boldt, chair of the Board of County Commissioners, delivered the “state of” address, discussing ways in which the county can help foster a positive business climate. He expressed his personal support for public schools and encouraged others to back school funding measures.

“We have great capacity among those working. Just as important is our reserve of people currently unemployed and eager to work,” he said. “Believe me, new employers will come to an area where their employees are satisfied with the schools.”

Earlier in the program, commissioners Boldt, Steve Stuart and Tom Mielke honored local volunteers when they presented Spirit of Clark County Awards to:

Clark County Veterans Assistance Center – Staffed by more than 40 volunteers, the organization helps veterans returning home after military service in areas such as health care, family relationships, and benefits.

12th Annual “Klineline Kids Fishing” Day – Hundreds of volunteers helped  1,500 youth ages 5 to 14 learn about natural resources in the company of parents and guardians.

Joan Caley of Vancouver – a community health nurse specialist who has served on the county’s Public Health Advisory Council since 2003.
