As Walmart opens in Woodland, Les Schwab plans new store

With a new Walmart Supercenter opening Jan. 26 in Woodland, city officials are anticipating construction in the coming months on a Les Schwab Tire Center nearby.

Woodland officials confirm that other retailers and restaurant operators also are looking at sites in the general Walmart area, west of Interstate 5 at the Dike Access Road exit.

Walmart will employ roughly 300 workers at the store, which will offer 155,000 square feet of retail with a third of the space devoted to groceries. A Subway sandwich shop and Regal Nails salon will operate inside the store. Walmart will not sell tires in anticipation of the Les Schwab plans.

Oregon-based Les Schwab will build a store starting this spring, just south of the Woodland Walmart.

"I expect to see construction get started in a few months, once the ground dries out," Woodland Mayor Chuck Blum said.

Board allocates 2011-2012 funding for Greater Clark Parks District

Clark County commissioners met as the Greater Clark Parks District Board and approved a budget of $9.4 million for
2011 and 2012.

The county will use about $5.6 million of the budget to continue building parks and related facilities in underserved areas, under a program established in 2005. The remaining $3.8 million will be used to maintain and operate existing facilities.

“This is a great time to build public facilities that will serve us for many years,” said Public Works Director Pete Capell. “Private contractors are prepared to deliver quality projects at very favorable prices. When we award a contract, it supports construction jobs and puts dollars to work in the local economy.”

Housing Authority Plans $28.8 Million in New Development and Capital Improvements

The Vancouver Housing Authority (VHA) has $28.8 million in new development and capital improvement projects planned for 2011. In particular, two new developments account for a large portion of that figure.

Camas Ridge, which broke ground this past August, is scheduled for completion in mid-summer 2011. The $7.5 million project, located on Prune Hill in Camas, will provide 51 apartments, both market-rate units and apartments available to those earning 60% or less of area median income.

Construction on the second development, Vista Court Apartments for seniors, begins later this month at a projected cost of $16.1 million. The 76-unit apartments, for seniors 65 years of age and over, will be located just north of the VHA’s existing Van Vista Plaza apartments in downtown Vancouver.

The VHA is also planning approximately $6.7 million dollars of capital improvements to selected properties. Most of those planned improvements are scheduled for the Springbrook Village in Orchards and Teal Pointe apartment complexes in Hazel Dell.
