Washington expands credit union powers

Gov. Chris Gregoire (D-Wash.) signed legislation last week that allows public units to deposit funds in credit unions.

The bill adds 70 Washington state credit unions to the list of 105 public depositaries, allowing for more community-based banking choices for the state's public units. The new law also strengthens the safety of those public dollars by diversifying risk at a time of escalating bank failures and unscrupulous behavior by financial institutions, according to Gregoire.

The legislation is scheduled to go into effect July 1, 2011.

Two new tax benefits to aid employers

Two new tax benefits are now available to employers hiring workers who were previously unemployed or only working part-time as part of the federal Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, which was enacted into law on March 18.

Employers who hire unemployed workers this year (after Feb. 3 and before Jan. 1, 2011) may qualify for a 6.2 percent payroll tax incentive, in effect exempting them from their share of Social Security taxes on wages paid to these workers after the date of enactment.

In addition, for each worker retained for at least a year, businesses may claim an additional general business tax credit, up to $1,000 per worker, when they file their 2011 income tax returns.
