Dave Underriner

The Walk to Defeat ALS, held in downtown Portland at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30 at the World Trade Center, aims to raise awareness and funds to help “uncover the mystery of a disease that affects as many as 30,000 annually,” the organization said.

More commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a neurodegenerative disease that in three to five years, robs a person of their ability to walk, speak, swallow and eventually breathe. Little is known about what causes it.

As corporate chair, Underriner hopes to leverage his contacts to gain support for the event and the Association.

“I am proud to be serving as the corporate recruitment chair for the ALS Association’s Walk to Defeat ALS,” said Underriner in a press release. “Providence and our physicians are fortunate enough to work very closely with the ALS Association through our multidisciplinary ALS Clinic. I see the impact of this terrible disease has on people’s lives, and the extraordinary care and support provided by our team to patients and their families.”
