City of Vancouver selects new community & economic development director

Vancouver City Manager Eric Holmes recently named Chad Eiken as the city’s new community and economic development director.

Eiken brings more than 24 years of professional planning and management experience to his new position – nearly 20 years of that time working for the city of Vancouver.

“Chad’s service with the city, understanding of our systems and plans, as well as his relationships with the community we serve make him as an excellent fit for community and economic development director,” Holmes said.

Eiken’s appointment follows the strategic reorganization of the city’s community and economic development department, where focus has shifted to reducing layers in the planning and permitting process and where paperless permitting is now being developed.

Eiken has been a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners since 1994, and has served on the board of directors of the Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA) and as president of the Southwest Section of the Washington APA.

Miller Nash partner Steven Hill was recently named president of the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools board. The Foundation provides resources to students and families in Vancouver Public Schools for basic needs, mentoring and enrichment opportunities, with the mission to create opportunities to cultivate and inspire student success. Hill has served on the board as an officer since 2009.

“After several years of supporting local education through his position on the board, we’re thrilled that Steve has been selected as its president,” said Kieran Curley, managing partner of Miller Nash. “The Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools is an important organization that affects the quality of life for all families in our region, and Miller Nash is proud to have Steve involved.”

At Miller Nash, Hill leads the law firm’s Southwest Washington environmental and natural resources practice. Since joining the firm in 1993, he has represented landowners and developers in responding to wetland and other natural resource issues affecting the development and use of real property in Oregon and Southwest Washington. He has also assisted clients in obtaining permits for some of the larger development projects in the area.

The Southwest Washington Contractors Association (SWCA) has announced the appointment of Albert Schlotfeldt of Duggan, Schlotfeldt & Welch PLLC to their board of directors.

Schlotfeldt has more than 20 years of experience in construction, real estate and commercial law. He is also an accomplished litigator, negotiator, arbitrator and mediator, taking a personal, responsive approach when working with clients to determine the best strategy for their needs, the organization said.

“Albert has been a strong advocate of our industry and in our community for many years. We are honored to have his involvement on our board,” said Dan Goff, SWCA president.

Schlotfeldt is a graduate and board member of Leadership Clark County and is also a board member of the Responsible Growth Forum.

Columbia Bank recently hired LuWana Woodruff-Lentz to serve as vice president and small business administration loan officer at its the Vancouver branch.

In her new position, the bank said LuWana will be responsible for underwriting and closing government guaranteed loans, working both with commercial and retail bankers to ensure loans are in compliance with program requirements.

“LuWana is an outstanding asset to not only the Vancouver branch, but to Columbia Bank as a whole,” said Mark Nelson, Chief Operating Officer at Columbia Bank. “Her extensive credit and underwriting experience, business development abilities and strong communication skills will help Columbia Bank enhance its small business lending presence throughout Oregon and Washington.”

Prior to joining the team at Columbia Bank, LuWana was vice president and relationship manager at West Coast Bank in the Government Guaranteed Lending Group, where she held the position for ten and half years. She has a total of 32 years of banking experience.

Montes AngelANGEL MONTES

Angel Montes has been selected as the new donor recruitment supervisor for American Red Cross Blood Services in Southwest Washington.

In his new position, Montes will be responsible for the logistics involved in meeting the demand for blood products.

Montes first became involved with the Red Cross as a youth volunteer and blood donor at
age sixteen while attending
Fort Vancouver High School.
He later progressed to lead recruiter and then to donor scheduling supervisor. For the past four years, he has been a territory representative responsible for recruiting sponsors and establishing community blood drives.

Montes will be working out of the Clark County Donor Center located near the Westfield Vancouver Mall at 5109 NE 82nd Avenue.

Montes AngelTHOMAS BRUNER

The Oregon and Southwest Washington affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure recently announced the hiring of Thomas Bruner as its new CEO. The organization said Bruner will start his new post in August after returning to Portland from Washington, D.C.

In his new role, Bruner will oversee an annual budget of nearly $8 million dollars of direct and in-kind contributions.

Bruner leaves his previous position as vice president of corporate diversity with the American National Red Cross. He also served with the Red Cross as a division vice president, responsible for the oversight of some 60 chapters across New England and New York with 1,400 employees, 45,000 volunteers and annual expenses of $113 million.

Eric Olmsted, president of On Line Support, was installed as the 2012-2013 president of the Rotary Club of Vancouver last week.

Other officers are Susanne Cox, president-elect; Elson Strahan, president nominee; Victor DeAntonis, secretary; Gordon Rodewald, treasurer; Gary Bock, sergeant-at-arms and Timothy Buckley, immediate past president. Greg Jellison, principal at HDJ Design Group will continue as the president of the Vancouver Rotary Foundation. Other Foundation Board officers are Katlin Smith, president-elect; Patsy Eby, treasurer and board members Kate Benson, Hans Boehm, Susanne Cox, Timothy Buckley, Jeff Hamm, Jennifer Larson-Cody, Henri Moreau, Eric Olmsted, Jean Rahn, Dean Sutherland, Joe Vance and Steve Webb.

Shelly Crum, a member of Rebound Orthopedics and Neurosurgery clinical department, was recently awarded the company’s quarterly service excellence award.

Crum was nominated by
three of her co-workers for
being positive, helpful and a team player. One of her nominators wrote:

“There isn’t room to describe all the ways Shelly exemplifies the Core Values… She always gives her best effort, readily expresses appreciation and makes team members feel good about themselves. She is dedicated to her role and actively looks for opportunities to make a difference.”

Crum has worked at Rebound for five years. She was a unit coordinator in the clinical department and was recently promoted to site coordinator for Rebound’s Pavilion and Total Joint Center clinics. Most recently, she helped open the company’s east Vancouver office.
