It’s all in the numbers

Whether it’s cleaning off the countertops, slapping on new paint, bringing in temporary furniture or redesigning a landscape, the costs of home staging tend to draw substantial returns when a house sells.

A 2003 survey found that 81 percent of 2,000 real estate agents across the U.S. recommend staging homes for sale, and see an average return of 478 percent on whatever sellers spend pre-sale. The greatest returns on pre-sale preparation came from finding ways to lighten or brighten a home. Simple acts like removing heavy drapery, applying a lighter paint color or arranging a room to feel more spacious had an average return of 769 percent.
