Just laboring away…

I have just a few things to report before “vacation brain” takes over. Happy Labor Day everyone!

Profiles of Giving

Sept. 28 marks our third annual Profiles of Giving corporate philanthropy special edition of the Vancouver Business Journal. While I have been collecting stories of good deeds accomplished and funds dispersed all year from companies and nonprofits here in Southwest Washington, I’m certain I have not heard from all of you. Profiles of Giving is just that – a look at the individual tales of generosity that help nonprofits and charitable organizations to succeed here in the region.

In the past we have looked at banks, Realtors, construction companies, restaurateurs – from well-known philanthropists to those who are quietly going about the business of giving. Email me at jswanson@vbjusa.com and let me know how your company has contributed in the last year to the health of its community.

Q4

The fourth quarter has us hopping here at Brown Warrior Publishing. We are putting another issue of North Bank Magazine to bed – the October 12 publication centers on arts and entertainment in Southwest Washington. My only caveat is that the arts scene here is so robust, we can’t begin to cover it in depth with one issue, so enjoy our fall release and look for more arts coverage in subsequent issues. November brings the release of the annual Health Resource Guide followed quickly by the 11th annual Book of Lists. Email Kimberly Smith at ksmith@vbjusa.com to get your business listed in the appropriate category in either of these books.

New digs

We successfully moved into our new offices at 1251 Officers Row just after the last newspaper went to press. The usual hassles gave way to a lot of bonding and gorgeous new accommodations, so all is well in the end. Stop by and see us anytime. We swear we will have a housewarming, but you can badger us about it – we don’t mind.

Labor Day

Many of us are off on the Monday observance day called Labor day. Here’s a little background for those history buffs among us, from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.

In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

On June 28 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

Have a great weekend!
