Delta Computer Systems: Business in motion

Vancouver entrepreneur Eric LaBrant

The company now has clients throughout North America, as well as South Korea, Brazil, China, Finland, Sweden, Norway and beyond. In Brazil and China, they have been able to leverage local market experts, who identify industrial applications that would fit their products and services, freeing the company of the obligation to have permanent staff on site.

“This way, we only need to visit a few times per year and everybody benefits,” he added.

In round numbers, approximately 60 percent of their clients are in North America, 20 percent in Canada, and 20 percent in the rest of the world. With a strong presence in both New Zealand and India, they are now looking to expand into Australia.

Delta has developed a single software to support all of their controllers, and offers comprehensive training for clients and partners.

“Training is a very important part of our pre-and post-sale process,” Savela said.

The company conducts web-based and classroom training, and offers videos that clients can access online. Custom training for specific clients is also offered; Delta trains more than 300 people per year worldwide.

“We also offer onsite advanced technical training for experienced engineers and technicians,” Savela added, usually involving 15 or 16 people for three days at the Battle Ground campus. These offer clients a firehose effect, with a great deal of training in a short time. They involve both lecture and lab, covering a broad range of features and capabilities.

“We’ve been all over the U.S. for regional training as well: Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle and more,” said Savela.

Regional training has declined of late, as live online training has increased, saving both Delta and their customers travel costs. All participants gather simultaneously via video conference, with a limit of five participants.

“With our technology, we can still offer remote hands-on experience,” he said.

Further support is available through live technical support 24/7 at no additional charge. The tech support calls are fielded by staff in Battle Ground, who are ready to respond via email or pager if they cannot connect immediately by phone or video conference.

In the coming decades, Delta predicts further incremental growth, particularly within Pacific Rim countries. They also look forward to further developing their non-motion control products: utility safety instruments for transmission line crews (developed in concert with Bonneville Power Administration), color sensors, proprietary detection and defect removal systems for food industry, and private label products related to motion control.

In the past, Delta has partnered with Washington State University Vancouver in research, and has hired several of their graduates.

“There are so many advantages to our Clark County location,” Savela said. “Our employees all live very near our campus. I think I drive the farthest, about 10 miles from east Vancouver.”
