VDA has an active volunteer board of directors that is committed to invigorating the city's central business district. Recent initiatives include the development of a downtown retail strategy, helping to improve downtown's safety and security, investing in urban gathering places such as Turtle Place on the former bus mall property on 7th Street and sponsoring many events throughout the year like First Friday Artwalk.
