Vancouver Clinic designates $40K for literacy

The Vancouver Clinic has assigned $40,000 to its Reach Out and Read program, which builds on the relationship between parents and medical providers to develop children’s literacy.

Doctors and nurses receive training to talk with parents about the importance of reading aloud with young children, and give children a book at each check-up. The clinic began the ROR program a year ago, serving more than 50,000 Vancouver-area children.

The state’s ROR program debuted in late 2007 and now has 65 participating medical practices and 300 participating medical professionals.
