VDA project brings new public art piece to downtown Vancouver

Vancouver’s Downtown Association (VDA) announced on Thursday that a significant piece of public art will soon be added to a highly visible downtown corner.

“Heart and Stone” is slated to be unveiled on the corner 6th and Columbia during the First Friday event on October 2nd. This massive heart and supporting basalt boulder is meant to capture the spirit of Vancouver’s founding mothers. It will measure 12 x 10 x 4 feet and weigh approximately 4,500 pounds. The artists whose inspiration will create the piece are Jennifer Corio and David Frei of Vancouver’s Cobalt Designworks.

“Part of VDA’s mission is to enhance connectivity throughout our downtown,” said VDA Executive Director Lee Rafferty. “We do that strategically with plantings, storefront projects, and art such as this new installation. ‘Heart and Stone’ will add yet another ‘uniquely Vancouver thing’ for visitors to discover as they make their way from place to place. We are thrilled that it will be brought to us by these very talented artists. You may recall it was they who brought us ‘Flying Umbrellas’ at the corner of Evergreen and Main.”

The location for this new piece of public art, chosen by a selection committee, was due to its key proximity to the Vancouver Farmers Market, Esther Short Park and the convention center.
