McMenamins is planning to open a new brewpub and hotel on the waterfront at the Port of Kalama. Port commissioners approved a lease agreement with the Portland-headquartered company this week.

The new facility will include a 40-room hotel, meeting rooms, gift shop, restaurant, brewery and rooftop brewpub as well as a smaller pub a short walk away at the Port of Kalama’s Ahles Point. It is expected to be open for business by the end of next year.

“This is happy news for Kalama and the entire region as we expect this new establishment to bring jobs and tourism to area,” said Alan Basso, president of the Port of Kalama Board of Commissioners, in a press release. “This McMenamins location – at a breathtaking spot right on the Columbia River – offers a new destination for travelers and tourists who may have never stopped in Kalama before. We expect an economic boon for the entire community.”

McMenamins, which operates 54 distinctive pubs, restaurants and historic hotels in the Pacific Northwest, plans to incorporate Kalama’s Hawaiian heritage into the design of its buildings by modeling them after the historic Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, Maui. The city and Kalama River are both named after John Kalama, an employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company who was originally from Kula, Maui.

Collins Architectural Services, the Longview-based firm that designed the Port of Kalama’s new administrative building and interpretive center, is the project architect. Once design work is complete, the port will construct the building’s shell and exterior, as well as parking, landscaping and rough-in electrical and mechanical features of the facilities.
