Paying it Forward: Carol J. Curtis

Volunteer of the WeekName: Carol J. Curtis

Current employer or place of business: Windermere Stellar Real Estate

Organization(s) I volunteer with: H-RoC Political Action Committee

How I got involved: I was invited to participate in an organization that promotes women in local nonpartisan elected positions and encourages them to aspire to local leadership roles in all organizations. I became a member of the H-RoC Board of Directors, and co-chair of the “Let’s Win” Committee, which is focused on interviewing and endorsing candidates for nonpartisan elected positions, as well as providing mentoring and financial support.

Why I give back: I served 30 years as a public utility commissioner, and served for years on the Vancouver Chamber of Commerce and Clark College Foundation boards. I saw the benefit of having women in leadership positions within our community, and wanted to further that cause.

Proudest moment as a volunteer: Every time I see one of our women succeed in winning her election, and watch them perform their jobs in an honorable and successful way, it makes our organization proud!

What local challenge or issue are you most passionate about? Local politics – that’s the environment that can make a community successful. “Political will” to do the right thing for all our citizens takes courage and leadership. I want to see women play a larger role in this process.

Just for fun: What are your hidden talents? I have had a brief professional career in music: vocal and piano. Also I love to watercolor.
