Columbian cuts 30 jobs

Citing a weak economy, The Columbian publishing company announced it had eliminated 30 jobs from its 360-person staff.

The company has failed to meet its revenue projections throughout the past year due to slowing real estate, automotive and retail advertising markets, the newspaper reported.

In January, The Columbian moved its operations to a new building in downtown Vancouver, which is separately owned by a Campbell family real estate company.

Port of Vancouver reports 2007 activity

The Port of Vancouver’s annual state of the port address presented 2007 as a year of progress and growth despite the failure of the $78 million industrial development levy in August.

The port’s imports and exports, combined with leases of industrial space, brought total revenue to nearly $28 million in 2007 – up from $24.3 million in 2006.

Goals for the port commission in 2008 include supporting the port’s West Vancouver freight access project, assuring private cleanup of the former Alcoa smelter property and closing property purchases for the development of a maritime terminal and industrial space.
