Proudest professional moment: In 2012 I received a national award – The Edmund Friedman Young Engineer Award for Professional Achievement – from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). What makes the award truly special to me is that I was nominated by my peers.
First job: I grew up on an alfalfa farm in Eastern Oregon (Hermiston), so my first job was working on the farm. My first “paid” job was working at a large feed and agriculture supply store when I was in high school. The feed store manager had purchased my labor time at a Future Farmers of America (I still have my blue corduroy jacket!) fundraising Labor Auction. After I worked my auctioned time, he told me how impressed he was with my work ethic and offered me a job.
Fun fact: I really enjoy indoor rock climbing. About two years ago, I had a friend invite me to climb with him at The Source Climbing Center and I was hooked immediately.
Favorite spot on a Saturday night: Anywhere with my wife and three daughters.
Favorite movie: I am a big movie buff, so it is tough to narrow it down to just one favorite. Top five are: For Love of the Game, The Godfather, The Usual Suspects (the Kevin Spacey walk at the end is one of the best scenes ever), Casablanca (classic Bogey) and Rio Bravo (because everyone should have a John Wayne movie in their Top Five).
Music of choice: I enjoy classic rock, jazz, blues, and I am always in the mood for classic country.
Favorite place to eat: I love to cook, so my favorite place is at my home entertaining friends and family. When I do eat out, I enjoy Lepellah, Tasty & Sons and Shanahan’s Pub & Grill.
Motto/Inspirational quote: One of my favorites is a quote from golfing great Jack Nicklaus about the game of golf, but I feel it applies to life: “Confidence is the most important single factor in this game, and no matter how great your natural talent, there is only one way to obtain and sustain it – work.”
