Clark operations manager picked for program

Clark College Operations Manager Jennifer Grove has been selected to participate in the National Institute for Leadership Development’s Leaders program.

The yearlong program is designed to enhance the skills participants need to assume major decision-making roles in their institutions and includes practice in supervisory and human relations skills, planning and budgeting and organizational transformation.

As a participant, Grove will be mentored by Clark President Robert Knight and Micki Caskey, assoc. professor in the graduate school of education at Portland State University. She is a doctoral candidate in education leadership at PSU, where her focus of study is the intersection of women’s leadership and organizational culture at community colleges in Washington.

 

Workforce Assoc. lands $500,000 earmark

Washington Democratic Sen. Patty Murray has included $500,000 in the Labor, Health, Human Services and Education Appropriations bill – the annual spending bill that funds labor priorities – to expand the Washington Workforce Assoc.’s In Demand Scholars program.

The program was created in 2004 by the WWA, the Washington State Labor Council and the Assoc. of Washington Business. It prepares students to enter local, high-demand occupations through outreach to local employers, job shadowing, internships and scholarships for post-secondary training.

Since then, more than 140 students have been involved with the program, which focuses on students who may

not otherwise attempt to achieve a four-year college degree.

 

Benton, Evans return from China delegation

Sen. Don Benton, R-Vancouver, and Yacolt Primary School Principal Ken Evans are part of a group of 11 state legislators and six K-12 educators who just returned from a nine-day trip to China.

The Washington delegation joined with about 250 educators from across the United States to learn more about China’s economic competitiveness and what role its educational system plays.
