Free Clinic gets $75,000 grant to start program

The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington received a $75,000 grant through a new program administered by the Washington State Health Care Authority. The clinic will use the grant funds to start Project Access of Clark County, a program to coordinate donated specialty and primary care services for low-income residents.

Ten community-based health care organizations were awarded a total of $1.4 million in the Community Health Care Collaborative grants. The grant program was established during the 2006 legislative session.

Grant recipients were selected from 27 applicants and will get half of the funding in each year of the two-year awards. The state funding is to be combined with twice the amount in matching funds, primarily from the communities they serve.

Legacy hospitals win environmental awards

All five Legacy Health System hospitals, including Legacy Salmon Creek Hospital, received separate environmental leadership awards from Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E), a national nonprofit focused on the reduction of waste volume and toxicity, efficient energy and water use, clean air, safe work practices and safe buildings. It was founded by the American Hospital Assoc., Environmental Protection Agency, Healthcare Without Harm and the American Nurses Assoc.

Legacy Health System also received the Sustained Environmental Leadership Award, H2E’s highest honor reserved for facilities or groups that demonstrate innovative and consistent environmental achievements over time.
