Vancouver police building attains LEED certification

The West Precinct Police Station in Vancouver was awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver certification on July 20.

The silver designation is awarded to projects meeting or surpassing the basic levels of energy savings, CO2 emissions, water efficiency and several other environment-focused criteria.

"This is testament to the efforts of the whole project design and construction team," said Brightworks sustainability advisor Josh Hatch, a consultant on the project.

Hatch credited the work of architects Group Mackenzie and Vancouver-based Team Construction as instrumental in securing the building's recent LEED silver designation.

The West Precinct station is the latest area project to gain a LEED certification as more construction companies are prompted to implement sustainable and environmentally-friendly building techniques.

VSO appoints executive director

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra this week announced the appointment of Vancouver resident Carly McDowell as executive director.

McDowell has served as marketing director for VSO since April.

A 25-year marketing, development and public relations veteran, McDowell studied music and voice while growing up in New York. Her work history includes leadership positions as executive director, development and community relations director at Children's Hospital Foundation and Guild Association in Seattle and Sno-King Youth Club in Edmonds, Wash.

 "A sense of pride belongs to everyone who lives in Southwest Washington - as we have a highly talented, professional 75-member orchestra, conducted by a world renowned director-composer, Dr. Salvador Brotons," McDowell said.
