What exactly is mead?
That’s the question Gary Gross, owner of Battle Ground-based Ethereal Meads, gets most often. So how does he answer it?
“It’s not beer and it’s not wine; it is its own beverage type, defined by the fact that at least half the fermentable sugar for any mead comes from honey,” he explains. “Fermenting the honey with different fruits and spices makes the possibilities for mead limitless.”
Gross launched the production-only business in early 2012 after spending 30 years in the specialty chemical industry.
“Making something I’m passionate about is a whole lot of fun,” he says. “Having a background in design, production, quality assurance and sales has helped significantly to operate nearly as a one-man show up to now.”
