The Port of Vancouver is taking a closer look at what it would take to develop a community-based public market on the waterfront.

On Thursday, the port announced a partnership with Project for Public Spaces (PPS), a non-profit planning, design and educational organization, to study the possibility of a market at Terminal 1 (the former Red Lion at the Quay site).

According to the port, the study will examine how a downtown Vancouver waterfront market could look and feel, how it fits with local culture, how it can harmonize with other similar programs (like the Vancouver Farmers Market) and, if implemented, keys to success.

“The port is interested in building a public market that reflects our community, and the PPS team are experts at planning public markets that are sustainable and active,” said Katy Brooks, the Port of Vancouver’s director of economic development. “We look forward to working with them, local businesses and the community as we begin plans for a great public waterfront.”

The port and PPS are conducting a pair of events on Sept. 19 and 20 to gather information from key community stakeholders and potential vendors. Local retailers, artisans, farmers, and food and beverage firms interested in lending their insights to the study are invited to attend a vendor focus group meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 20 at Terminal 1. The meeting will include a presentation and an interactive question and answer session.

To RSVP to the Sept. 20 meeting, email rsvp@portvanusa.com or call 360.693.3611.

The study is expected to be complete by next month.
