Battle Ground eyes development opportunities with adoption of “Complete Streets” policy

The Battle Ground City Council has adopted a Complete Streets policy, paving the way for increased state and regional financing of local multi-model transportation projects.

Complete Streets refers to a policy and planning approach to street design, construction, maintenance and operation that accommodates all users of all ages and abilities. The program, passed in 2011 by the state Legislature, provides grants to communities that meet certain criteria. Program benefits include economic development, opportunities for physical activity and an increased sense of community.

“The city understands that in addition to planning for motor vehicles, alternative forms of transportation also are important,” said Scott Sawyer, Battle Ground Public Works director. “Helping encourage these alternative forms of transportation and looking for ways to reduce congestion were considerations in adopting our Complete Streets policy.”

Battle Ground is the first community in Southwest Washington to adopt Complete Streets policies and resolutions.
